About Ruben Gonzalez
Ruben Gonzalez is a four-time Winter Olympian in luge, renowned for his perseverance and historic career. Hailing from Campana, Argentina, he competed in the Winter Games in Calgary (1988), Albertville (1992), Salt Lake City (2002), and Vancouver (2010). He is the first Olympic athlete to perform in four decades of the Winter Olympics. At age 47 in Vancouver, he was the oldest luge competitor, and at 55, he became the oldest to compete internationally in the sport.
His journey began at 21, living in hot and humid Houston, Texas, where the Winter Olympics inspired him. Lacking natural athletic talent, he was often the last picked for school sports teams. His relentless work ethic propelled him to an Olympic debut within four years.
Gonzalez’s career is a testament to mental toughness and determination. He carried the Olympic Torch in 2002, the last time the Olympics were on American soil in Salt Lake City. The theme of that year’s games was “Light the Fire Within,” a testament to Gonzalez’s fantastic story. Beyond competition, he’s a bestselling author of several books, including “The Courage to Succeed” (2004), and a sought-after motivational speaker, addressing over 100 Fortune 500 companies on leadership and resilience.
