About Yuli Gurriel
Yuli Gurriel is a first baseman for the Miami Marlins, but he first gained acclaim playing in Cuba. Gurriel was a Cuban National Team star for many years. He won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics, a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, and a silver medal at the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Gurriel also spent two seasons playing in Japan with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. He officially defected from Cuba in 2016 and signed a five-year deal with the Astros. Gurriel went on to make his major league debut in August of that year. He played his first full season in 2017, batting .299 with 18 home runs and 75 RBI. Gurriel was also named American League Rookie of the Month in July. He helped the Astros reach the World Series and hit a home run in Game 3 of the series. Yuriel went on to great success in Houston, winning a batting title and Gold Glove in 2021. He then helped the Astros win another World Series in 2022 before joining the Marlins the following season.
