Johnny Hellweg

Johnny Hellweg was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and played his high school baseball at St. Dominic High School in O’Fallon. After a standout prep career he attended Florida State College at Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida and showcased one of the best power fastballs in the nation. At 6’9, 215 pounds, Hellweg is a force on the mound and has a premier curve ball to go along with an overwhelming fastball that tops out at 102 mph. After his freshman season at FSCJ he was selected in the 16th round of the 2008 MLB Draft and began what has become a successful professional career in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. In 2012 he became one of the Brewers top major league prospects when he posted a 3.29 ERA in 23 starts with 105 strikeouts in 139.2 innings pitched. The following season he topped that performance with a 3.14 ERA and 13-5 record in 24 starts, earning him a call-up to the big leagues. During his time at the major league level he has continued to dominate opposing hitters, striking out 26 batters in 30.2 innings. In 2014 he suffered an injury requiring Tommy John Surgery, however he is working hard to come back stronger than ever, and the Brewers believe that he can one day be a frontline starter at the major league level.
