Keith “Mex” Hernandez was drafted in the 1971 Major League Baseball Draft in the 41st round to the St. Louis Cardinals. Hernandez excelled in the field, finishing his 1975 season with a .996 fielding percentage and only two errors in 507 chances. He worked his batting up to .300 percentage and even hit a home run in game six of the 1982 World Series, which the Cardinals went on to win in seven games. After disagreements with Cardinal management, Hernandez was traded to the New York Mets in 1983. The trade from a World Series winning team to the worst team in the league motivated Hernandez to perform and helped to fuel a rivalry between the two teams in the 1980s. The Mets recognized Hernandez’s aggressive first base style and utilized it to their advantage to make bunting against them nearly impossible. Hernandez led his Mets to win the 1986 World Series over the Boston Red Sox. Hernandez won his eleventh Golden Glove in 1988 and won the Division that same year. He signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1990 and retired after that season. Hernandez has written four books and has been featured as a cameo on Seinfeld and Law and Order.
