About Ozzie Newsome
Ozzie Newsome is a former NFL tight end, spending his entire 13 year career with the Cleveland Browns. Dubbed the best tight end in the University of Alabama history, Newsome was a first round pick by the Browns in the 1978 NFL Draft, after four years of All-American caliber play at Alabama. His impact in the NFL was immediate, as Newsome was named the Brown’s Offensive MVP, the first rookie in Brown’s history to do so. Newsome would never miss a game over his 13 year career, being named to three ProBowls, winning two Super Bowls, and setting a Browns record with 662 receptions and 7,980 yards. In 1999, Newsome was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, enshrining his legacy within the NFL forever. After his retirement in 1991, Newsome worked in the Cleveland Browns front office for four years, eventually leaving the team to work for the Baltimore Ravens. In 2002, Newsome was promoted to general manager of the Ravens, becoming the first ever African American NFL GM. Newsome has led the Ravens to two Super Bowl victories, and is still serving in this role today.
