Pierre McGuire

Pierre McGuire was born in New Jersey and grew up in Montreal. From 1979 to 1982 he was a standout performer on the Hobart College baseball, football and hockey teams. After earning his undergraduate degree in English he played one season of professional hockey in the Netherlands before returning to begin a hockey-coaching career at Hobart College in 1984. The following year he made his way to Babson College as an assistant hockey and lacrosse coach, where he remained until being hired as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University in 1988. In 1990 he was hired as a special assignment scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Just one year later he was promoted to assistant coach and would go on to help the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992. After the 1992 season he was hired by the Hartford Whalers, and would go on to serve as the Whalers general manager and head coach until 1994. After stints with the Ottawa Senators and Baton Rouge Kingfish from 1995 to 1996 he began a successful career in broadcasting. McGuire had a long tenure as the lead hockey analyst for NBC Sports until being named senior vice president of player development for the Ottawa Senators in 2021.
