About Rick Welts
Rick Welts is the current CEO of the Dallas Mavericks after a successful run with the Golden State Warriors. Welts served as President and Chief of Operations for the Warriors, who won four NBA championships.
He began his life in the NBA as a ball boy for the Seattle SuperSonics before working up to the director of public relations position. Rick worked in the league offices where he is credited with creating the NBA All-Star Weekend concept and also developed the marketing campaign for the Olympic Dream Team. His work has earned him awards like Brandweek's Marketer of the Year.
While Rick's work with the league has been instrumental in improving the sport, he is also known for his work in campaigns to fight homophobia in sports. In 2011 Welts became the first prominent sports executive to come out and be openly gay. He came out in an interview with The New York Times and subsequently became a member of the advisory board for You Can Play, an anti-homophobia campaign.
