Sheldon Kennedy

Sheldon Kennedy spent parts of eight seasons in the NHL. The Detroit Red Wings originally selected Kennedy in the fourth round of the 1988 NHL Draft. He went on to play in 310 games and notch 107 points. Kennedy also went to four straight postseasons with the Red Wings and Calgary Flames, appearing in 26 playoff games and scoring ten points. He had a banner junior career, helping the Swift Current Broncos to the Western Hockey League's 1989 Memorial Cup. Kennedy played for Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1988 and 1989, assisting his country to gold medal victory in 1988. Perhaps his most important endeavor however has been his fight to raise awareness for victims of sexual abuse. Kennedy went public to share his story of abuse that came at the hands of a former coach. In 1998, he roller bladed across Canada to raise money for sexual abuse victims. In retirement, Kennedy helps operate Respect Group Inc, an organization that gives people tools to prevent bullying, harassment, and abuse. He released his autobiography, Why I Didn't Say Anything - The Sheldon Kennedy Story in 2006 and a documentary about his life called Swift Current came out in 2015. For all of his great work, Kennedy has received countless awards and he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014.
