About Earnest Byner
As an inductee of the East Carolina Hall of Fame, Earnest Byner played three seasons as a fullback for the Pirates. Following that, Byner was selected in the 10th round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Byner went on to have a 14 year NFL career with the Browns twice, the Washington Redskins, and the Baltimore Ravens. Byner had a successful career in the NFL and find himself at 16th on the all-time NFL rushing list with 8,261 rushing yards. As a versatile back who could also catch and return kicks, he had a total of 72 touchdowns in his career. In his first stint with the Cleveland Browns, Byner provided Cleveland fans with one of the most painful memories in history when he fumbled on the 3-yard line in the 1987 AFC Championship game, giving birth to "The Fumble." Throughout his career Byner was named to two Pro-Bowl teams and won a Super Bowl ring in 1992 with the Washington Redskins. Since retiring, Byner has been a running backs coach for several teams and currently serves in that role at the IMG Academy.
